Kindergarten students at Bardstown Primary recently experienced a hands-on learning adventure during the annual Five Senses Carnival, made possible through a mini-grant from the Bardstown Foundation for Excellence. Over two days, students rotated through nine engaging stations that encouraged them to explore sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch—bringing science lessons to life in fun, interactive ways.
The event was designed as a culminating activity for the students’ “Five Senses” unit, where they learn how humans gather information about the world. At each station, students practiced observation, problem-solving, teamwork, and communication, all while developing foundational skills in the scientific process.
Students traveled through the following stations:
🔊 Hearing Stations
What’s That Sound? – Students shook mystery containers and used their listening skills to match each sound to a picture on their recording sheets.
That's Music to My Ears! – Ms. Danielle’s RoomAfter watching a short video, students experimented with musical instruments—playing, trading, and discovering how different sounds are made.
😋 Taste Station
Taste Test – Students sampled sweet, salty, sour, and savory foods, recording their predictions and reactions. Some classes added blindfolds for an extra challenge.
👃 Smell Stations
Can You Smell It? – Using scented markers, students identified smells and matched each scent to the correct picture on a double-sided worksheet.
Smelly Jars – Working together, students opened 24 scent jars and used picture cards to match each jar to its corresponding smell.
✋ Touch Stations
Mystery Boxes – Wearing blindfolds, students reached into “Feel It” boxes to identify hidden objects using only their sense of touch.
Tactile Balloons – Students squeezed numbered balloons filled with different materials and matched each texture to the correct image.
👀 Sight Stations
Can You See It? – With googly-eye glasses and highlighters, students completed Hidden Picture puzzles to strengthen visual discrimination skills.
Visual Memory Games – Students tested their memory by studying picture slides and then placing counters on the items they remembered.
Events like this exemplify the Foundation’s mission: to support innovative learning opportunities that enhance student experiences across Bardstown City Schools. By providing mini-grants for creative classroom projects, the Foundation helps make hands-on, impactful learning a reality for every student.
We are proud to support educators and students as they explore, discover, and grow through programs like the Five Senses Carnival.
